Have you ever seen a cat owner who leaves the wet food out for their pet overnight?
If so, it’s probably because wet food has a pretty low water content. This isn’t feasible for wet cat food though!
If left overnight the moisture in the food will cause bacteria growth, which of course is not good for kitty.
There is one exception to this rule though, the Purina Outlast formula!
It is a dry food that has antibiotic and immune support properties to help keep your kitty healthy. It also has extra antioxidants and added vitamins and minerals for longer life and improved health!
If you want to take care of your cat the best way possible, feed them Purina Outlast!
Can I Leave Wet Cat Food Out Overnight?
Wet cat food that has been left out overnight should never be eaten by cats, unless forced to do so by necessity.
Wet cat food shouldn’t need to be taken out of the fridge and left out all the time, however.
No more than two or three hours, though.
This is due to the fact that bacteria flourish in warm, moist environments and spoil the food quickly.
While a cat’s biology is different from ours, it’s reasonable to assume that it shouldn’t consume foods that could cause us harm.
In addition to the health hazards associated with leaving wet food out overnight, it poses a risk of causing stomach upset or diarrhea in your cat.
In addition, your cat is unlikely able to thoroughly chew through the dry kibble that is offered at most veterinary clinics.
While wet food has various benefits for your cat, one negative is that it may spoil quickly when exposed to heat.
How Long Can Wet Cat Food Sit Out Before It Goes Bad?
It is common for wet cat food to smell like ammonia which can be pretty gross.
Food should then be stored in airtight containers or in the refrigerator for freshness.
I realize this is not convenient and some food cannot be stored this way but is necessary to keep the food fresh and healthy for the cat.
Due to bacteria on the cat’s tongue and paws from constant grooming and licking, wet cat food should be changed more frequently than dry food to avoid illness.
However, the kind of food you’re feeding can also impact whether or not it spoils or not.
As the temperature rises and the food becomes more humid, it becomes more susceptible to spoilage.
Before placing any additional food in the bowl, be sure to rinse it with water and place it in the refrigerator immediately.

How Can You Tell If Wet Cat Food Is Bad?
You can tell if your cat’s wet food is bad if it has an unusual smell or appearance.
Cats use their sense of smell very well to notice odors in wet food. Most spoiled wet foods develop an unmistakable scent of decay or decomposition.
This scent is typically stronger than the fresh scent of the food. You may notice this if your pet sniffs the food or touches it before eating it.
Even when you store the food in the refrigerator, wet cat food might have spoiled before you have a chance to use it.
A cat’s refusal to consume food is not a trivial pet problem and should never be ignored.
If your cat has eaten spoilt cat food and is showing symptoms of sickness and diarrhoea, consult your vet immediately.
If your vet advises you to feed your cat an alternative type of food – following examination – then here at Mayhews we bring over 100 years of pet product experience to the table when it comes to selecting the best wet cat food for your precious companion.
Additionally, you should be on the lookout if your pet shows clear signs of dehydration or hyperthermia (an elevated temperature) after feeding.
After ingesting, your cat exhibits abnormal behavior such as a sudden increase in activity or agitation.
At the beginning, it is normal for the animal to smell or lick an unfamiliar food.
Even if you accidentally let your cat open a bag of food, you should take immediate actions to have the spoiled food removed immediately.
Repeating this activity, on the other hand, would result to gastrointestinal distress and diarrhea as an outcome.
You may take your cat to a vet if it remains rigid and limp after several days of eating rotten food.
You have the highest duty to ensure the health and well-being of your pet.
